Job Description

Position salary range:  $90,000 - $100,000

Position reports to:  Executive Director

The Director of Development will help fulfill the vision and goals set forth in the fundraising and communications plan to increase awareness and commitment to Canopy Life’s mission and to grow revenue through major gifts, annual and monthly donors, foundations, and special events.

The Ideal Candidate is someone with 5-8 years experience in nonprofit fundraising. Experience in major gifts, communications and strategic planning is a plus. An entrepreneurial spirit will serve them well as they work alongside the Executive Director to expand the development efforts of the organization. They most likely will have a passion for children, traveling and expanding the gospel internationally.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Development

  • Supervise Development and Communications team comprised of the Trips Coordinator responsible for coordination of donor trips and event logistics, the Development Manager, the Development Administrator, a contract Child Sponsorship Coordinator and contract communications team member.

  • Design and implement a strategic, comprehensive annual development campaign which includes individual and major gift appeals and direct and email appeals.

  • Manage portfolio of major donor prospects.

  • Develop plans that move prospective donors through the development cycle of identification, information, involvement, and investment over 18-24 months.

  • Close a target number of major gifts annually.

  • Manage future capital campaigns.

  • Develop and nurture mutually beneficial partnerships with public/private organizations, businesses, foundations, major gift donors and individuals for sustained philanthropic support of Canopy Life’s mission and programs.

  • Work collaboratively with the Operations and Finance team.

  • Lead in the planning, preparation, and execution of team meetings to support campaign activities, donor relations and special events.

  • Communication of Mission, Vision and Goals

  • Manage contracted communications team in content creation that promotes the mission, work and current events of the organization through multiple platforms.

  • Provide direction to contracted communications team in creation of content as it relates to development efforts.

  • Provide a leading voice and representation of Canopy Life International to donors and partners through public events and social opportunities

Event Planning and Execution

  • Create, organize, and manage yearly events that support the annual campaign as well as specialized events for planned capital campaigns.

  • Responsible for management and support of signature events including, but not limited to, annual gala, donor cultivation events and annual report dinner.

  • Manage and cultivate key relationships and sponsorships in support of special events.

  • Oversee US Programs and Child Sponsorship Coordinators in development of relationships and sponsorships of annual Kenya Trips.

  • Attend weekly in-person strategy/staff meetings, team meetings, and donor meetings.

  • Serve as a representative of Canopy Life’s at designated events.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5-8 years experience in nonprofit development with a proven record of securing gifts

  • Experience in major gifts, communications and strategic planning a plus

  • Strong written and verbal skills that communicate to and inspire diverse audiences

  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, MailChimp, social media and online database systems

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize meetings and events

  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with ability to effectively interact and collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds and interests as well as cross-cultural environments

  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment

  • Ability to travel to Kenya 1-2x a year

  • Willingness to travel for in-person meetings with staff and donors, mostly within Metro-Atlanta

  • Operational vehicle capable of travel and valid driver’s license required


Office/Other

  • This position will enjoy a hybrid structure with a remote office and regular in-person meetings with staff and donors throughout the region.

  • This position does not currently include company-offered health benefits, although they plan to in the future.

  • Canopy offers a generous PTO package including 14 paid holidays and an additional two weeks off at Christmas.
