PEER is a unique non-profit organization that defends federal, state, local, and tribal employees committed to environmental protection and scientific integrity. Through litigation, advocacy, and direct support, PEER works to empower public employees to be agents of change while holding agencies accountable. PEER’s work supports environmental professionals, health experts, land managers, scientists, and enforcement officers, advocating for higher ethical standards and a commitment to transparency.
PEER is seeking a dynamic and ambitious Director of Development and Communications to lead and expand its fundraising and communications efforts in support of its mission to protect the environment, uphold scientific integrity, and advocate for public employees’ rights. PEER provides free, pro bono support to public servants who advocate for better environmental practices, working against political and corporate interests that threaten the public good.
PEER has built a strong foundation for its $1.4M+ development program, which is supported by a growing base of individual donors and foundations. The organization does not accept government or corporate donations to maintain its independence.
The ideal candidate has at least 7 years of non-profit development and leadership experience, with a proven track record of securing individual and foundation gifts, including 5-figure gifts.
The Director of Development and Communications will oversee and expand PEER’s development program, including donor cultivation, major and planned giving, and grants, while also driving communications strategies to amplify PEER’s mission and advocate for environmental protection, scientific integrity, and whistleblower support. Reporting to the Executive Director, Tim Whitehouse, the DODC will lead a small, growing remote team and collaborate with senior leadership to achieve organizational goals. Key responsibilities will include leading fundraising efforts, cultivating relationships with donors and foundations, expanding major and legacy giving programs, researching new funding opportunities, managing communications, enhancing case visibility through the media, digital platforms, and public relations to amplify PEER’s impact, and ensuring alignment with PEER’s strategic objectives and budget.

Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience. PEER offers a generous benefits package, including 13 paid holidays, up to 20 days of vacation time a year, 10 sick days, 5 bereavement days, and 3 weeks of family leave per year. A comprehensive health benefits package is offered, as well as 5% match on retirement contributions.
