How did you get interested in the fundraising profession?
Like many of you, my introduction to fundraising was extremely grassroots. Early on in my career, when I was a schoolteacher and basketball coach, funding was extremely limited for our athletics’ program. One year, in partnership with the PTA, we hosted an antique fundraising event at our school to fill the gap. I literally told everyone I knew and met, and along the way I learned that people were willing to give. I got my ASK in gear! Well we raised more funding than we could have imagined that year. I applied those same concepts with other projects and learned that I was actually good at connecting the dots and making the ask. The rest is history!
What is something you wish you knew early on in your fundraising career?
I wish I knew that fundraising was a true career path. No one in my sphere of influenced talked about being a professional fundraiser. Now there are many schools that support our profession and I am so excited about how people new to this space can take advantage of the training and mentorship available to develop their craft.
What is the one quality every fundraiser should have?
We should all understand the power of CONNECTION! Connecting with people is key to success. This profession is a people business. When we connect, we will collect!
What inspires you about the fundraising profession?
I am inspired that everyday I get to help people solve some of our communities’ greatest challenges. Every day --because I said YES to this profession, someone’s life will be changed or impacted positively.
How do you want to be remembered as a professional?
I want to be remembered as someone who chose to advance the I.D.E.A. concepts in our profession. I imagine a day in which all fundraising professionals feel equipped with skills, prepared, supported, and a sense of belonging despite their differences.
