Job Description
The Director of Development, Corporate Strategies is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding philanthropic revenues from corporations and corporate foundations while interfacing and collaborating with colleagues across the Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office and hospital departments.
Reporting to and working in close partnership with the Assistant Vice President, Corporate and Foundation Relations the Director works to maximize funding and proactively seeks new opportunities while adhering to complex compliance issues in gift designation and administration. They raise an average of $4-5M per year and serve as a relationship manager for a set of 150 corporations that have the capacity to make gifts of $100K+.
The Director of Development plays an integral role in strengthening the corporate strategies program for Mass General Hospital by fundraising for mission-driven cutting-edge clinical and research programs and priority areas that depend on philanthropic support. The Director works closely with internal Mass General Brigham and hospital departments and teams, such as Office for Interactions with Industry, Office of General Counsel and Public Affairs and Marketing teams in matters related to corporate relations.
The Director is an office ambassador and is empowered to represent Mass General Development at the hospital with minimal guidance from their supervisor and within the context of their functional responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will be a collegial and entrepreneurial team player with a track record of raising corporate revenue, professional growth and successful relationship management in a sophisticated organization. They will be a strategic thinker with excellent communication skills and the ability to engage, influence and persuade others.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Actively manage a portfolio of 150 prospects and donors generally capable of making gifts at the $100K or higher level:
Formulate, document and execute prospect and donor moves management strategies.
Conduct donor meetings and prospect qualifications through both proactive and reactive donor identification and engagement.
Successfully solicit and close gifts, working with hospital leaders and volunteers as appropriate to develop and produce compelling donor proposals.
Achieve and track assigned metrics and raise between $4M-$5M annually from new and existing donors.
Collaborate with colleagues across fundraising teams to achieve team and overall Development Office fundraising goals.
Fully document work in the donor database, Blackbaud CRM.
Work with prospects to develop and enhance the relationship to and connection with the hospital, ultimately leveraging that relationship to maximize philanthropic giving.
Mass General is currently in a $3 billion Campaign, therefore Campaign qualifications are expected.
Create, maintain and strengthen collaborative relationships with hospital leaders including physicians, researchers, administrative directors, Chiefs of Service, and Vice Presidents.
Develop an understanding of the research, clinical, teaching and community missions at Mass General.
Remain current on corporate philanthropy trends that are necessary to be an effective ambassador for programs and giving opportunities for both donors and internal colleagues.
Develop an understanding of a range of giving opportunities (including named giving opportunities and the annual fund), and cross-team disciplines.
Identify, define and maintain a menu of giving opportunities for assigned areas, and collaborate with cross-team partners to produce case statements and proposals.
Attend events as assigned and ensure that other appropriate hospital representation is in attendance.
Travel as necessary for prospect meetings, conferences, and events.
Participate in professional development.
Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods.
Assist with recruitment activities as needed.
Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership.
Adhere to the mission, credo, and standards of behavior of Mass General.
Qualifications
This position requires a bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of experience. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in corporate fundraising/partnership management in a healthcare environment or other complex organization and a comprehensive understanding of corporate fundraising principles and practices. A consistent record of relationship building, both internally and externally, is also desired.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, abilities and competencies:
A portfolio of positive relationships with and/or knowledge of corporate philanthropy and corporate social responsibility programs, both nationally and internationally
Demonstrated success with solicitations involving grant or proposal writing
Clear, persuasive and effective writing and presentation skills
Excellent relationship skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse internal and external contacts
Experience devising and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors at all stages of engagement, from newly identified prospects to loyal donors
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work autonomously under pressure of multiple and sequential deadlines
Active and receptive listening skills and the ability to influence others
