Associate Director of Development – Spartan Fund (Athletics)
Michigan State University – University Advancement

The MSU Spartan Fund is seeking an enthusiastic and results-oriented Associate Director of Development to help drive philanthropic efforts for MSU Athletics. As a key fundraiser, you will manage a portfolio of donors, with a focus on securing major gifts ($50,000 and above) to support MSU’s 23 varsity programs, benefiting nearly 700 student-athletes annually.

You will work closely with athletic department leaders, coaches, and other colleagues to engage prospects, cultivate relationships, and solicit gifts, both within Michigan and nationally. This role requires regular travel and participation in evening and weekend events, representing MSU Athletics at home and away games, donor activities, and other functions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Fundraising: Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, making strategic moves to secure 6- and 7-figure donations. Conduct at least 15-20 significant personal contacts per month, with 30+ solicitations annually.
• Collaboration: Work with athletic leadership, coaches, and University Advancement colleagues to align donor interests with department needs.
• Strategy & Coordination: Develop strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 or more. Maintain an awareness of regional cultures to enhance prospect engagement.
• Volunteer Engagement: Assist in recruiting and sustaining a network of volunteers to help identify and cultivate prospects.
• Event Participation: Serve as a liaison for assigned varsity sports, participating in athletic and donor events.

Qualifications:

• Required: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, or related field. 3-5 years of experience in public relations, volunteer administration, fundraising, or marketing. Valid driver’s license.
• Preferred: Five or more years of development experience, with at least three years focused on major gifts. Strong understanding of charitable giving, athletics, and higher education fundraising. Experience with “Moves Management” preferred.

• Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Availability for 50% travel, including weekends and holidays.
